University of San Carlos: The Social Work Community Club

"It is a challenge coming from the city and working in the country-side, where the culture and language is so different. PFP will help me break down barriers and work with cultures other than my own."

Meet the Social Work Club at the University of San Carlos in Guatemala. This is the oldest and largest University in Guatemala. The club is an opportunity for students to promote cultural integration, cooperation, leadership skills and more. Trainer Andres Armas began working with the Social Work department in 2006 as part of a United Nation Volunteer Program Grant and has continued to support them every year since then as a volunteer. Andres now trains all 5th year undergraduate Social Work students, who are placed in 5 month practicums all over the country with 2 training workshops. Andres calculates that he has worked with over 1000 young adult social workers about to embark on their career. Andres says he loves working with these students because they are so dedicated to making change, and already have great leadership skills. As one student suggests: "Guatemalans need to work better in groups in order to have more success in their communities." In this series of photographs, 56 students attend their first Play For Peace training session. We also invite you to read some of their comments about Play for Peace, and how it is assisting them with their goals.
"I’m excited about using this methodology to create integration, which so necessary in divided communities." "I think that Play for Peace will help me promote the participation of women and girls in the community projects I am working on." "It is a challenge coming from the city and working in the country-side, where the culture and language is so different. Play for Peace will help me break down barriers and work with cultures other than my own."
